Sensory Space is thoughtfully organised into distinct categories, each designed to meet the diverse needs of students with special educational needs. These categories offer a structured and engaging approach to sensory learning, encouraging attention, interaction, creativity, and exploration at every stage of development.
Control.
Begin developing a learner's understanding of cause and effect through active engagement. In these "press and hold" activities, animations and sounds are triggered only while the learner activates their access device and stop as soon as the activation ends. This helps learners connect their actions to outcomes, encouraging intentional interaction and reinforcing their sense of control over their environment.
Engage.
Support learners in exploring cause and effect through timed interaction. Known as "press and let go," these activities are triggered by a single activation of the access device and run for a set duration before pausing. During this time, further interaction has no effect. Once the animation ends, learners can activate their device again to restart it, encouraging repeated purposeful interaction and sustained focus.
Interact.
Encourage learners to explore cause and effect through repeated and flexible interactions. In these "press it again" activities, each activation of the access device triggers an animation, allowing learners to engage as often as they like. Multiple animations can happen simultaneously, with objects returning to their original state when complete. This approach supports active exploration, curiosity, and purposeful engagement.
Switch.
Introduce learners to the concept of "on-off" to develop their understanding of cause and effect. These activities begin with a single activation of the access device and continue until another activation stops them. This helps learners recognise how their actions can control events, building their ability to interact with and understand their environment.
Explore.
Encourage learners to engage in discovery through movement and interaction. In these "exploration" activities, animations respond as learners activate or move their access device across the screen. This encourages curiosity and discovery, helping learners connect their actions with the responses they see while building an understanding of cause and effect.
